Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

It is painful and hard to swallow for some days after surgery. You will have a stiff jaw and will find it quite hard to open your mouth. This is normal and will improve as you heal in time.
Yes, you can eat with stitches in your mouth. You can easily eat soft foods such as smoothies and yoghurt along with mashed potatoes. Soups are good for your health too during those days. Avoid hard and spicy food items. You should not try eating the small seeds and peanuts.
The healing would take a bit longer, perhaps 3 to 6 months. The type of surgery you had also determines recovery time. Some operations may take a few days because of swollen gums. Major surgery would need more recovery time. Just keep on following instructions from your dentist and you will go back to your normal life after a few months.
It is perfectly fine to brush your teeth. But brush it gently especially close to the area of the surgery. Do not brush over stitches or wounds. You can rinse with salt water and ask your dentist for tips to keep your teeth clean.
The surgery is not quite painful due to the sleep medication and anaesthesia. Local or general anaesthetics usually applied by the dentist ease out the major pains during the surgery. Because of this medication, most people will experience no pain at all.
